Math
  • Our October Number Corner this month will focus on collecting data and measuring mass over time on some funky looking carrots.  In addition we will be making observations on the top/front/side view of buildings and determining the shape they all make when put together.
  • This week taught and practiced some division strategies and assessed what we learned this week to officially end our work with Unit 1.
  • Next week we will begin Unit 2 where we will focus on how to add and subtract fractions.  We will start with using clocks and money to help us add and subtract.  Luckily, we did some work with this in our September Number Corner already!  Finding our common denominators and equivalent fractions will be key to our success.
  • Check out what we will be doing in Unit 2!!

Literacy this week
  • Our first EL Module is about Human Rights and we will be using the book Esperanza Rising as a mentor text.
  • This week we took a mid-unit assessment.  It was modeled after the work we did last week together and in small groups.  Now it was time for the to show what they could do on their own.
  • Then we worked with groups on how to participate in a Text Based Discussion Group in preparation for our end of unit assessment that we started on Friday.
  • Next week we will begin Module 1 Unit 2!!
Science
  • Our first unit is called  Patterns of Earth and Sky and we are answering the question:
Why do we see stars at different times?
  • Our third chapter's guiding question is:  Why do we see different stars at different times of the year?
  • We took an end of unit assessment this week, but we still have one more chapter before we move on.  We will finish up this unit next week.
Social Studies
  • During the  weeks of October 16, 23 and 30th, our 5th graders will do a short unit on Native Americans.  We will be using the text Mountain Wolf Woman by Diane Holliday to guide our learning.
SELS/Health lessons
