New News
  • This week and next on Thursday afternoon, your 5th grader met/will meet with Randall's social worker to engage in the district mandated CPU (Child Protective Units) lessons.  This week we sent home some letters explaining what we would be covering. We encourage you to ask your 5th grader what was covered.

Oldie, but Goodies
  • Please remember to sign and return the Digital Device Agreement form to school.
  • Students will need headphones and a computer mouse at school.  Please send this in as soon as you can--Thanks!
Math
  • Our September Number Corner this month will focus on making connections between numbers written as fractions and decimals and start our work with volume in tangible and strategic ways.
  • This week we spent more time looking at, discussing and working with the concept of volume using a "real life scenario" called Bob's Baseballs.  Bob will be revisiting us throughout the year. The concept of volume will also come back in the Spring, so if there is confusion right now, there will be other opportunities later.  In addition, we worked with perimeter, area, arrays and strategies to help us figure these out. Finally, we started to explore the world of expressions, equations and order of operations.  This first unit is A LOT of new information.  Rest assured we will revisit as the year continues.
  • We took the AMath assessment as a 5th grade to gather data to help us plan for instruction.
Literacy this week
  • We will be doing a short book study that will compliment our first EL module.
  • The book is called Boys Without Names by Kashmira Sheth (a Madison author) where we will begin the important discussion around human rights.
  • We started working on our one on one initial fluency assessments with students for the year. Students also took the aReading assessment that will give us general idea of their comprehension skills. Using this data together will help us guide our instruction level moving forward.
  • Next week we begin our first module in EL!!
Science
  • Our first unit is called  Patterns of Earth and Sky and we are answering the question:
Why do we see stars at different times?
  • Our first chapter's guiding question is:  Why don't we see a lot of stars in daytime?
SELS/Health lessons
  • What is Social Emotional Learning?
  • Healthy Me, Well Me
