Oldie, but Goodies
  • Battle of the Books:  Let your family know that they can come support you.  If they can't attend in person they can watch the competition over Google Meet at this link.  Please ask them to log on early before the Battle.
  • 5th grade will have 3 field trips this Spring.  The first one is a film festival.  There is no cost, but we can't take any chaperones.  For the last two, we would love to have as many chaperones as we can!  However, you do need to be Level 2 certified/approved to join us.  It is a long process to be approved.  If you think you might want to join us, please look at information on this process: Interested in volunteering at Randall or chaperoning a field trip with your student's class? - start the process by visiting the Volunteering page at MMSD’s website.
Math
  • February Number Corner will focus on finding the area of objects using fractions for dimensions. Students will also do some metric conversions using liquids. There will be some problem strings that will support the learning we are doing in Unit 5 with multiplying fractions.
  • This week and next week we will work on multiplying fractions by fractions and  model what this looks like. In addition, students are learning skills on how to convert improper fractions into mixed numbers (and the reverse) and simplifying fractions.
  • In a few weeks we will graduate to talking about how to solve and model division of fractions and whole numbers.
Literacy this week
  • Our second EL Module which is about rainforest canopies.  We will be using the narrative nonfiction text The Most Beautiful Roof in the World as well as a variety of other articles and text support our reading and writing.
  • This week we completed Module 2!!  Students completed their narrative writing and a variety of other connected literacy projects.
  • Next week we will begin Module 3-Athlete Leaders of Social Change.  The text is Promises to Keep-How Jackie Robinson Changed America by Sharon Robinson.  We will be focusing on reading  how to find and write about main ideas and key details.

Science
  • This week we worked on our third science unit of the year: Modeling Matter
  •  The question we will be investigating and answering is:
What happens when two substances are mixed together?
  • Our first chapter's guiding question is:  Why did the food coloring separate into different dyes?
  • Our second chapter's guiding question is:  Why do some salad dressings                                               have sediments, and others do not?
SELS/Health lessons
  • Intersectionality and Social Identity
  • Advertising Healthy Routines
  • Watch the Randall Way video for February via your child's Google Classroom.
  • Our focus this month will be on handling bullying behavior and our goal is 1,100 paws to earn a game day in March.
