New News
  • There will not be a blog entry for next week as school is only in session for 2 days.  A new post will be uploaded on December 1st.
Oldie, but Goodies
  • Fall Break will be November 22-24
Math
  • November Number Corner will focus on classifying triangles, placing triangles on a coordinate grid and observing the triangles as they transform from day to day on the grid.  In addition, we will make conversions using the metric system and make connections between decimals and fractions.
  • This week, we worked to find, recognize, read, write and round decimal numbers using place value labels.  We then moved into adding, subtracting, ordering and comparing decimals.  We explored some strategies for multiplying and dividing decimals by powers of ten.
  • Thinking of decimals in terms of fractions was another skill that we learned at the beginning of the year in terms of money and clocks, but now we are expanding that understanding to any fraction and decimal.
  • After Fall Break, we will start looking at how we can use our knowledge with conversion in the metric system.
Literacy this week
  • Our first EL Module is about Human Rights and we are using the book Esperanza Rising as a mentor text.
  • This week we were working on our monologues for the final project/presentation Module 1.  Students are in groups, but will be creating their own writing piece to present.  We still have some conferencing, peer edits, and a director's note to finish, but we are on our way.  Our plan right now is to have these completed and ready to present by the start of December or shortly after.

Science
  • This week continued our second science unit of the year: Ecosystems Restoration
  •  The question we will be answering is:
How do organisms in an ecosystem get the matter and energy they need to grow and thrive?
  • Our first chapter's guiding question is:  Why aren't the jaguars and sloths growing and thriving?
SELS/Health lessons
  • Understanding the differences between conflict and bullying
  • Conflict resolution
  • Watch the Randall Way video for November.
  • (This month is featuring students in Mrs. Faber's class!!!) It looks like you are not able to access the video with a link.  Instead, ask your 5th grader to show you the video via their Google Classroom account.
  •  Our focus this month RESOLVING CONFLICT and we are working towards a goal of 1,000 Raccoon Paws to earn a December Movie!!
