New News
- Thanks for making the time and effort to meet with us this week!
Oldie, but Goodies
Math
- November Number Corner will focus on classifying triangles, placing triangles on a coordinate grid and observing the triangles as they transform from day to day on the grid. In addition, we will make conversions using the metric system and make connections between decimals and fractions.
- This week we revisited and reviewed our fraction strategies and learning. We also did a unit review to help us prepare for the test. Some classes took the test today and others will take it on Monday. After the test, we will take a few days to work with Greatest Common Factors and Least Common Denominators before we begin Unit 3.
- Unit 3 will focus on Place Values and Decimals.
Literacy this week
- Our first EL Module is about Human Rights and we are using the book Esperanza Rising as a mentor text.
- This week we continued in Unit 2 in Module 1.
- This week we finished up our two voice poetry presentations. Then we deconstructed what a literary essay looks like and and continued to talk about reactions that characters have in the story based on events that occur. We began the process to write a literary essay comparing the reactions of two characters for our end of unit assessment.
- Next week we will finish the essay and begin the third and final unit in Module 1.
Social Studies
- During the weeks of October 16, 23 and 30th, our 5th graders will do a short unit on Native Americans. We will be using the text Mountain Wolf Woman by Diane Holliday to guide our learning.
- This week we finished reading the book, discussed, explored vocabulary words and wrote responses to what we read.
Science
- Next week we will begin our second science unit of the year!
- Our second unit is called Ecosystems Restoration (This unit will also support our 2 Module in EL when we begin in early December!) The question we will be answering is:
How do organisms in an ecosystem get the matter and energy they need to grow and thrive?
- Our first chapter's guiding question is: Why aren't the jaguars and sloths growing and thriving?
SELS/Health lessons
- Understanding Empathy and Perspective Taking
- Practicing our skills to analyze influences
- Watch the Randall Way video for October (Featuring Kampa Class!!) Our focus this month is being kind and we are working towards a goal of 1200 Raccoon Paws to earn an extra recess!!
