Math
- Our October Number Corner this month focused on collecting data and measuring mass over time on some funky looking carrots. In addition we will be making observations on the top/front/side view of buildings and determining the shape they all make when put together.
- November Number Corner will focus on classifying triangles, placing triangles on a coordinate grid and observing the triangles as they transform from day to day on the grid. In addition, we will make conversions using the metric system and make connections between decimals and fractions.
- This week we took fraction checkpoints that worked with unlike denominators, fractions of a whole and some conceptual understanding of fractions. We also worked with finding common denominators in order to add/subtract/compare fractions.
- Next week we will focus on revisiting and reviewing our fraction strategies and learning. We will do a unit review to help us prepare for the test we will take the following Monday (November 6th) after the long weekend. After the test, we will take a few days to work with Greatest Common Factors and Least Common Denominators before we begin Unit 3.
- Check out what we will be doing in Unit 2!!

Literacy this week
- Our first EL Module is about Human Rights and we are using the book Esperanza Rising as a mentor text.
- This week we continued in Unit 2 in Module 1.
- This week we worked with themes and metaphors. We then did some peer reviews around our writing and even engaged in some two voice poetry.
- Next week, we will deconstruct what a literary essay looks like and and continue to talk about reactions that characters have in the story based on events that occur. We are working our way up to writing a literary essay comparing the reactions of two characters for our end of unit assessment.
Social Studies
- During the weeks of October 16, 23 and 30th, our 5th graders will do a short unit on Native Americans. We will be using the text Mountain Wolf Woman by Diane Holliday to guide our learning.
- This week we read, discussed, explored vocabulary words and wrote responses to what we read.
