New News
  • Grades will be posted in Infinite Campus on February 2nd

  • We are setting aside a time to pass out valentines on Wednesday, February 14th if your 5th grader would like to bring in something for their peers.  (Class lists with names will come home.)

  • Now that 3rd quarter is starting, you may see little to no graded work coming home for awhile.  This is due to us needing to gather evidence/materials/student work for the students to prepare for their Student Led Conference in April.  The students can always ask us how they did on a test and share that information with you, but we will be holding onto these items until conferences.

Oldie, but Goodies

Math
  • January Number Corner involves revisiting some volume work.  Daily, we are given a "building" to observe, describe and look for patterns as it continues to grow.  When a building is complete, we use our observations to create a formula/algebraic expression that would work if the building continued to grow.  In addition, we are able to see how we can find the volume of a composite figure by looking at the rectangular prisms that work together to create the whole. In addition, we are doing some problem solving with adding fractions of money and time.
  • This week we compared multiplication strategies to the algorithm and then we practiced.
  • Next week, we will do some estimation and use multiplication to help us solve division problems.  Then we will review and take the Unit 4 assessment.
  • Unit 5 will be on multiplying and dividing fractions.
  • February Number Corner will focused on finding the area of objects using fractions for dimensions. Students will also do some metric conversions using liquids. There will also be some problem strings that will support the learning we are doing in Unit 5 with multiplying fractions.
Literacy this week
  • Our second EL Module which is about rainforest canopies.  We will be using the narrative nonfiction text The Most Beautiful Roof in the World as well as a variety of other articles and text support our reading and writing.
  • This week continued in Unit 2 of Module 2.  We did some close reading and then started planning for a literary essay based on author's craft.
  • Next week we will complete the essay that will be used as an end of unit assessment.  In addition, students will be assessed on their ability to read aloud a passage fluently and then summarize the main ideas of the passage.

Science
  • This week worked on our third science unit of the year: Modeling Matter
  •  The question we will be investigating and answering is:
What happens when two substances are mixed together?
  • Our first chapter's guiding question will be:  Why did the food coloring separate into different dyes?

SELS/Health lessons
  • Looking at managing stress.
  • Watch the Randall Way video for January via your child's Google Classroom.
  •  Our focus this month are kind behaviors on the bus and playground and we are working towards a goal of  1500 Raccoon Paws to earn a  February Stuffy/ Read-In/PJ day!! The video can be found in your child's Google Classroom.  Since we did NOT meet our December paw goal, the January incentive of a PJ day will be added into our February incentive if we meet our goal.

  • Our second EL Module which is about rainforest canopies.  We will be using the narrative nonfiction text The Most Beautiful Roof in the World as well as a variety of other articles and text support our reading and writing.
  • This week we began Unit 2 in Module 2.  We read some new texts and find the "gist" of their meaning.  We also looked at figurative language and author's point of view.
  • Next week we will finish a "mid-unit assessment" comparing texts and doing some close reading with our texts.  In addition, we will discuss point of view and how that can influence a text. We will actually do this assessment together as a class so that students have a solid model of what we are looking for moving forward.
